Greens

Goals

Greens are maintained year round. The surface should be smooth and consistent from green to green. Every effort should be made to provide a surface free from weeds, diseases, or other pests. For day to day play they should maintain a speed of 9.5-10.5 as measures by the stimp meter. Adjustment to these inputs will occur during periods of adverse weather issues for the health of the turf.

Objective

Reduce amount of Poa annua.
Decrease percentage of organic material in top 2 inches.
Improve drainage.

Procedures

Mowing; Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday in season (Mid-March/April through Mid-
November/December). Variable based on need in off season (November through March).
Rolling; Wednesday, Friday in season (Mid-March/April through Mid-November/December).
IPM; Daily.
Pest control; As needed.
Aeration; Solid tines in March and again in August.
Topdressing; At aeration and once per month in May, June, October and November.
Vertical mowing; At aeration and with topdressing in May, and October.
Cup placement; Daily in season, and as able off season. Add cups with covers for off season rotation.
Soil testing; Twice per year 3 weeks prior to aeration.
Fertility; As determined by soil sampling.
Irrigation; As needed.

Tees

Goals

To maintain a smooth level playing surface that is free of weeds, diseases and other pests. We will strive to encourage rapid divot recovery by rotating marker location and nutrient management. The primary concern for marker rotation will be turf health.

Objective

Reduce amount of Poa annua.
Decrease percentage of organic material in top 2 inches.
Improve consistency of marker alignment and positioning.

Procedures

Mowing; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in season. As needed in off season.
IPM; Daily.
Pest control; As needed.
Aeration; Solid tines in March and again in August.
Topdressing; At aeration and once per month in May, June, October and November.
Vertical mowing; At aeration and with topdressing in May, and October.
Marker placement; Daily in season and move to front of tees in off season.
Soil testing; Twice per year 3 weeks prior to aeration.
Fertility; As determined by soil sampling.
Irrigation; As needed.

Fairways

Goals

Reduce amount of Poa annua.
Decrease percentage of organic material in top 2 inches.
Confirm, adjust, and maintain proper distance marking.

Procedures

Mowing; Monday, Wednesday, and Friday in season. As needed in off season.
IPM; Daily.
Pest control; As needed.
Aeration; Solid tines in March and again in August.
Vertical mowing; At aeration in August.
Distance markers; Trim around every other month and repair as needed.
Soil testing; Twice per year 3 weeks prior to aeration.
Fertility; As determined by soil sampling.
Irrigation; As needed.

Rough

Goals

To maintain a smooth level playing surface that is free of weeds, diseases and other pests. We will control irrigation to maintain the proper soil moisture and firmness of the playing surface. Monitor and adjust mowing heights and frequency to maintain a fair and consistent rough condition, while balancing with turf health.

Objective

Reduce the amount of weeds.
Fill in bare spots.
Improve mowing procedures.
Add additional first cut width.

Procedures

Mowing; Monday through Friday in season. As needed in off season.
IPM; Daily.
Pest control; As possible.
Aeration; Late summer.
Over seeding; In late summer, First cut with 200#’s Perennial Ryegrass.
Distance markers; Trim around every other month and repair as needed.
Soil testing; Twice per year 3 weeks prior to aeration.
Fertility; As possible.
Irrigation; As needed.

Sand Traps

Goals

To maintain a smooth consistent surface free of debris and with adequate sand depth throughout bunker. Keep a clean edge and ensure proper drainage.

Objective

Maintain 3” minimum sand depth.
Add border material to any collapsing edges.
Place rakes in bunkers.
Adjust irrigation to reduce compaction and moisture levels.

Procedures

Raking; Daily throughout season and as needed and possible in the off season.
Edges; Trim and edge three times per year. Push up sand as often as needed.
Rakes; Check for damage, quantity, and placement.

Course Set-up

Goals

To insure course is ready for play prior to the golfers beginning their round on any given hole. Place holes and tee markers in proper locations to minimize wear to the turf and to add variety to the course.

Objective

Make sure course is set up properly for the locations as communicated.
Complete all tasks prior to play.

Procedures

Cups - Changed daily and moved into proper hole locations. Cups, flags, and poles inspected for damage and replaced as needed. Cup is to be countersunk into ground using cup setter to establish proper depth. Area inside hole not covered by cup is to be painted uniformly and consistently using provided painting tool.
Markers - Changed daily to evenly distribute wear.
Markers should be approximately 20’ apart and no closer the 3’ from the front and 6’ from the back of the tee.
All set up is to be completed prior to golfer play.

Practice Areas

Goals

We will maintain all practice areas to the same standards of the golf course to most closely replicate the conditions found during a normal round of golf.

Objective

Reduce Poa annua on putting and chipping greens.
Improve distance marking and target areas in driving range.
Maintain an attractive practice area free from weeds, trash and debris.

Procedures

Mowing; Chipping and putting areas to be completed on the same schedule with similar course surfaces. The driving range is to be mowed weekly on Thursday’s after removal of range balls by pro shop staff.
Cup changing; Will be evaluated daily and moved on an as needed basis.
Tee station movement; To be completed by pro shop staff daily.

Trees and Landscaping

Goals

To maintain healthy weed free plants to enhance the appearance and playability of the course for the enjoyment of all residents.

Objective

Improve weed removal in all landscaping beds and tree wells.
Replace all dead and dying deciduous trees in the fall and evergreen trees in the spring.
Establish an overall landscaping plan for the entire course.

Procedures

Mulch; Remove and replace all mulch each spring.
Weed control; Apply a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring prior to mulching.
Replacement; Evaluate all plant material at least one month prior to scheduled replacement.

Golf Course Accessories

Goals

Maintain all benches, ball washers, coolers, trash cans, signs, cart paths and bridges in proper working condition.

Objective

Make repairs to or replace all course bridges and seal, stain or paint to improve appearance.
Improve and add consistency to traffic control measures.

Procedures

Inspect; Daily and remove or replace all damaged and non-function accessories. If no replacement is available, notify supervisor so replacement can be ordered.
Movement; Ropes and return to path stakes will be evaluated daily to distribute wear route golfers from any temporary disruption or hazard.

Irrigation

Goals

To maintain the irrigation system in proper, like new, working order.

Objective

Improve coverage and function of all green and tees heads.
Evaluate each sprinkler head for adjustment to meet turf needs.
Maintain proper pond levels to address golfer and resident issues.

Procedures

Inspect; Daily after each watering cycle to identify any malfunctioning heads, and monthly to insure proper rotation and coverage.
Trimming; Every other month to keep grass from interfering with operation and to allow for golfer recognition of yardage markings (replace as needed).
Schedule; Adjust water schedule daily based on ET rates, rainfall and soil conditions to reduce and conserve as much water as possible.

Course Etiquette

Goals

While implementing these standards, we will enhance the golfers experience by minimizing the impact on the golfers round by adhering to the accepted rules of golf course etiquette. We will follow the “Golden Rule” of do to others as you would want them to do for you.

Objective

Reduce disturbance to golfers play
Enhance awareness of staff to all golfer and resident issues.
To achieve a courteous and helpful maintenance staff.

Procedures

Noise; When golfers are present, stop and lower machine to idle prior to golfer addressing the ball.
Mowing pattern; If possible, when working in and during play, proceed in reverse order to minimize the number of time a group is impacted.
Courtesy; When in the vicinity, wave and acknowledge in a friendly manner all golfers, residents and fellow employees.
Trash; Do not pass or mow over any trash on the course but pick it up and place it in the proper container.
Impact; Make sure that when you leave an area that it is in as good or better condition than when you arrived. Spread clippings, pick up debris, rake footprints in bunkers, and make sure golfers are as happy (or happier) than when they first saw you.

Safety and Training

Goals

To provide a safe environment for residents, golfers and employees, free from all hazards and issues.

Objective

Ensure the course, facilities and staff, are in compliance with all local, state and federal laws and regulations.
Initiate routine inspections to ensure compliance and to provide a safe course and workplace.
Eliminate worker accidents by education of proper procedures and policies.

Procedures

Inspect; Daily all facilities and the course for any hazardous conditions and notify supervisor immediately. If a condition exists which could place a person in danger of harm, make sure the condition is addressed in a manner which restricts any access, and makes others aware of the danger before leaving the scene to report to supervisor.
Compliance; Ensure that all permits are current and hazardous communication programs followed.
Educate; Hold bi-weekly safety meeting to educate staff on all safety and compliance related issues.
